Why Is Smoke Coming From My Fireplace?

A smoky fireplace isn’t only a big nuisance, it’s dangerous to your health. Wood smoke has fine particles and harmful pollutants that aren’t good for your upper respiratory system when inhaled. Your chimney is designed to redirect these toxins out of your home, but if something is wrong, the smoke has nowhere to go and will back up into your living space instead.

What triggers a smoky chimney? Let’s look at some common causes:

  • The damper is closed. It happens to all of us – you had a momentary brain lapse and forgot to open the damper before starting a fire. Open it up and you should be good to go.
  • The creosote buildup is out of control. Creosote is a natural byproduct of burning wood. It builds up in your chimney over time and can impede airflow and proper ventilation.
  • You’re using unseasoned or green wood. Green and unseasoned wood has a high moisture content that produces more smoke (and creosote). Try switching to a seasoned hardwood like maple or oak.
  • There is a blockage. There are a number of things that can clog your chimney and block smoke from getting out – twigs, leaves, old insulation, and even critters. An annual chimney sweep can keep your chimney clear of debris.
  • There is negative air pressure. Modern homes are tightly sealed which can affect the air pressure in your home. Trying opening a window to promote better airflow.
  • The chimney is cold. We don’t have many cold fronts in Orange Park, but a sudden dip in temperatures could be a shock to your chimney. On chillier days, preheat your chimney by burning some newspaper before starting a full fire.
